🌱 Planting Prosperity: Coffee Farming Gains Ground in Siaya...
By Babz Media – 16th September
In the heart of Siranga Sub-location, Ukwala Ward, Ugenya Constituency, a quiet revolution in agriculture is unfolding. Mr. Ogutu Ochola, a determined coffee farmer, has become a symbol of resilience and innovation as he nurtures young coffee plants with the guidance of the Siaya County Extension Officer in charge of coffee.
This visit underscores the growing momentum behind coffee as an alternative cash crop in Siaya. Traditionally known for crops like maize and sorghum, the region is now witnessing a transformation as farmers embrace coffee to diversify incomes, boost household earnings, and align with national agricultural growth strategies.
Adding to this movement is Mr. Ochieng Ogutu, widely regarded as a champion for coffee development in the western region. His vision is bold yet practical: to make coffee the main cash crop across Western Kenya. Through advocacy, mentorship, and collaboration with county governments and stakeholders, Mr. Ochieng Ogutu has been instrumental in mobilizing farmers and creating awareness of the untapped potential of coffee.
Speaking during the extension officer’s field visit, Mr. Ogutu Ochola emphasized the importance of partnerships in building a sustainable future for farmers:
“This is more than just planting coffee; it is planting the seeds of a new economy for Siaya. With the right support, farmers here can compete with the best coffee producers in Kenya.”
The Coffee Board of Kenya and other key industry players are now being called upon to take notice of Siaya’s emerging coffee belt, where the dedication of local farmers is laying the foundation for long-term prosperity.
Babz Media remains committed to documenting and amplifying these inspiring agricultural stories, ensuring that the voices of farmers are heard and recognized at both county and national levels.
